Reborn

“It’s time.” Cariel shrugged his wings and held out his hand. Donna looked up with curiosity, excitement and a little fear. “Don’t be afraid, you’ve never let me down before.”
“Before?” Donna’s voice was dry and nervous. She took Cariel’s hand and stood beside him.
“Sure. You’ve made this journey at least a hundred times. And if I may say, you get better and better every time.” Cariel smiled and the iridescent mist around them shimmered like living mother of pearl.
“Was I afraid before?”
“Sometimes. You’re much braver now, though. You had a long time on the path this last journey.” Cariel reached down and caressed Donna’s wavy silver hair. He stood a good three feet taller than she, and although he was the older one, her image was of an old woman. He knew that her appearance was merely a projection of her soul, but he was feeling a bit sentimental about her current features. He had watched over her through wars and hunger, love and sickness, joy, life, and death. Maybe this would be her last trek, her last study on the sublunary world. She had earned it, he thought.
Donna stood straight. Her fear dissipated as Cariel’s voice gave her strength and comfort. She couldn’t explain it but she felt that their friendship was deeper and longer than she was aware. Peace and calm saturated her mind and she smiled at Cariel.
“I think I understand, and I have a feeling I’ll be back.” Donna let go of Cariel’s hand and took a small step backward. Her smile widened as the silvery mist enveloped and condensed around her. “Thank you Cariel.”
Cariel watched as she waved goodbye and faded into the ethereal mist of time and space. Elemental fire, water, earth and air melded with her being, transforming and transporting her to her new place in the universe. He waved back, ready to take his place, unseen, by her side for however long she would be on this journey. This one last journey home.
As Donna disappeared, Cariel heard the first cry of a newborn baby, and knew she was safely on the path. He smiled when he heard the call, and went to watch over her once again.
